Sadly, Bel Canto will be closed from the 24th December until the 5th January, so you will have to rely on other sources for your Christmas-to-New Year music. Thankfully, London is full of beautiful music this time of year and some of our very own Bel Canto singers will be performing across the country, so you don’t need to be opera-free for long!
Our Five London Concert Picks
1) The Bach Choir – Carols at Cadogan – 16th December
Founded in 1876, this world-famous choir has sung everywhere – you can even hear their dulcet tones on the soundtrack to Ridley Scott’s Prometheus – and this December they will be back at Cadogan Hall. Head on over on the 16th December to enjoy an evening of festive music, accompanied by London City Brass and one of the finest organists of our generation – Phillip Scriven. Truly an evening of Yuletide greatness.
2) A Ceremony of Carols – Westminster Abbey – 18th December
What could be better than an evening of festive music? A free evening of festive music in an historic building! A London landmark, Westminster Abbey will be hosting a performance of Benjamin Britten’s well-loved sequence of carols for treble voices and harp. Sung by the Westminster Abbey choristers, each movement of the piece draws on a different medieval or early modern text, all of which come together in a musical masterpiece.
3) City of London Sinfonia: An English Folk Christmas by Candlelight – St. John’s Smith Square – 20th December
Representing Britain’s folk tradition is the City of London Sinfonia. Performing at St. John’s Smith Square in Westminster, it promises to be an evening of firm Christmas favourites, with music by the likes of Cleobury and Vaughan Williams, sung by the Holst singers. As well as these choral pieces from across the English countryside, there will be audience carols, seasonal readings and tales from some of the country’s best story-tellers.
4) Festive Family Carols by Candlelight – St. Martin-in-the-Fields – 22nd December
At the beautiful church of St Martin-in-the-fields by Trafalgar Square, St Martin’s Voices (a professional choir composed of choral scholars, past and present) will be performing a joyful celebration of many of your favourite carols. Perfect for an evening with all the family, the atmosphere will be even cosier as the whole service will take place by candlelight.
5) Advent and Christmas – St. Paul’s Cathedral – 24th, 25th December
One of London’s finest churches, St. Paul’s is not to be outdone on the musical front. All throughout Advent there will be a number of free services, masses, and concerts, notably Midnight Eucharist on Christmas Eve and the 11am Sung Eucharist on Christmas Day. This will feature music sung by the cathedral choir and congregational carols, presided over by the Bishop of London, with the preaching led by the Dean of St. Paul’s.
